Reccommendation: The Bluest Eye

4 Feb

From the absolutely divine Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye is a beautifully devastating account of the experience of the young black girl in a world where the societal ideal is fair-skinned and blue-eyed.

I’ll let Toni reccommend herself:

“If happiness is anticipation with certainty, we were happy”

“To find out how dreams die never take the word of the dreamer”

“Along with the idea of romantic love she was introduced to another- physical beauty. Probably the most destructive ideas in the history of human thought. Both originated in envy, thrived in insecurity and ended in disillusion”
(Not sure if I agree with her here, but her articulation is wonderful and her perspective is so valueable! It is interesting to read something more cynical, something where romantic love and physical beauty are not idealized as they generally are in popular culture)

“As in the case of many misanthropes, his disdain for people led him to a profession designed to serve them”
